SUMMARY:"One Leg at a Time" Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:After our residency with the inmates at the California Institution for Women\, this exhibition will give the audience an opportunity to walk in the footsteps of the participants. \n\n\n\n\nGallery open 5:30 – 8:30 pm \nPerformances: 6 and 8 pm \nPanel Discussion moderated by Abbe Land: 7 pm \nOne Leg at Time consisted of a three-month residency at the CIW where participants learned to connect to a creative\, self-affirming space of inner freedom in support of cultivating mental and physical vulnerability. The exhibition challenges both participants and audience members to evaluate how the arts can inform the conversation around mental health\, and sexual and physical abuse among incarcerated women. Attendees will be walking in the footsteps of the participants\, witnessing a performance by the teaching artists\, and participating in a panel discussion. This journey will allow all walks of life to be encapsulated in the participants’ world\, bridging the gap between the free and the incarcerated and fostering greater understanding\, empathy and respect. Concluding the journey\, spectators will be met by dancers embodying the women’s experiences. \nThis project is made possible with support from the California Wellness Foundation\, Just Detention International\, a Los Angeles-based health and human rights organization\, and California Humanities\, a non-profit partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
