As you may (or may not) know by now, your friends at Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre have been hard at work building a fish. Not just any fish, The Fish. The Fish is a 15-foot steel structure designed by our friend Alex Ward and built by our other friend Jeff Kleeman. It is the center point of our multi-year-long project, FishEyes

Why would a dance company need a 15 foot fish, you ask? Great question!

For dance of course!

This weekend and next we’ll be teaching free site-specific dance workshops with The Fish, and we want you to join us!

During the workshop, our teaching artists will explain the basics of site-specific dance and employ water themes as inspiration for movement. They’ll lead guided improvisation on, in, and around The Fish, and teach participants how to create original movement inspired by ideas, structures, and surroundings.

You in? Here’s what you need to know about the workshops:

  • They’re open to all ages and skill level! No past dance experience necessary!
  • They take place on Sunday, March 13 and Saturday, March 19, at 3pm on both days.
  • We’re holding them at Estrella Park in South Los Angeles. (1956 Estrella Ave, LA, 90007 map )

We hope to see you at the workshops, and the free community performance on Saturday April 2, same time and place as the workshops! If you need more information, please call 818.784.8669 and talk to our Experience Director, Allegra Padilla. (Or, if email is better for you, email Allegra@heididuckler.org.)

Thank you to our friends at LA Neighborhood Land Trust for providing the first home for The Fish! We’re very grateful. So is The Fish!

FishEyes is made possible in part through grants from the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, the James Irvine Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, DanceUSA/Engaging Dance Audiences, and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
